Backyard Wedding Cake: The First Attempt

I've been super excited to try out cake frosting ever since we went to Joann's and got some Wilton cake frosting decorating tips (although, in retrospect, it might have been better getting a cake decorating kit with instructions and piping bags from Amazon). So I was thrilled when my mom made some cupcakes, and decided to ice them with homemade butter-lemon frosting (made with butter, lemon zest, and powdered sugar).

Here's what the tip looks after we've screwed it onto the plastic bag using some handy accessories that I later learned were called "couplers"...

The first thing you should notice is that we tried to save money by using a zip-style bag instead of a real icing bag. This was a mistake; frosting ended up spewing out of the top of the bag pretty much every time we tried to apply pressure. Next attempt, we'll definitely use bigger bags, less frosting, or even splurge on getting some real icing bags.

We started out with the star tip. As you can see, we achieved some decent results right off the bat.

However, the frosting consistency unfortunately didn't hold the shape of the tip very well. We later tried to freeze the frosting, but that's when the bag exploded from the frosting pressure. I think that we'll have to read up more about different frosting recipes before we try this again; it seems that some are better suited to piping than others.

Here are our different experiments using the star-shaped tip:

We still haven't decided on the cupcake flavors or frosting, but I'm sure they'll end up tasty and (hopefully) looking a little better than these!

  1. Good to know about this information on backyard weddings. Couple of weeks ago, arranged my brother’s wedding at one of elegant NYC wedding venues. Decorated entire venue with beautiful ornaments and had a memorable time there.
